The road to the Oscars are finally coming to a close, after a whirlwind turn of events. On March 10, so many will be tuning in to see which stars will take home the coveted statuette at the 96th Academy Awards, and we, for one, can’t wait to tune in to see all the winners.

While we always adore the red carpet fashion that happens beforehand, there’s no red carpet event without the event. And what bigger event is there in the entertainment world than the Oscars?

Now, unlike the SAG Awards that streamed exclusively on Netflix, the Oscars are a bit more traditional: they’ll be airing on ABC. However, we’ve found a few ways you can watch the Oscars easily this year.

Below, see all the details about how and where to stream the 2024 Oscars.

When Do the Oscars 2024 Start?

Unlike years prior, the official ceremony is going to start an hour earlier than usual. It will begin at 4pm PT/7pm ET, and last at least three and a half hours.

Where Can I Watch the Oscars in 2024?

Like many years prior, US viewers can see the entire broadcast from ABC (and UK viewers can watch it on ITV).

What if I Don’t Have Cable, Which Streaming Services Carry ABC?

In the world of streaming, it’s not too uncommon to hear that one doesn’t have cable. Luckily, quite a few streaming services offer the ABC channel as part of one or more of their streaming packages.

You can either watch the free livestream HERE, or, you can finally pull the trigger on adding or upgrading to one of the streaming services where you can watch ABC. For those wondering, the different streaming services include Sling TV, DIRECTV STREAM, Hulu + Live TV, FuboTV, YouTube TV, and PlayStation Vue.

SlingTV

With SlingTV, you can get either the Orange or Blue package, meaning you get at least 32 channels to view. You can also get ABC on either package, but it depends on your zip code, so make sure to check beforehand! Packages are around $40 a month, but your first month can be $20.

DIRECTV STREAM

With multiple different packages, you can stream hundreds of channels with packages ranging from $69.99 to $159.99 a month, all of which carry ABC.

FuboTV

FuboTV is another Live TV streaming service with packages ranging in prices like $74.99 to $94.99, all of which include ABC.

Other Streaming Service Options

So if none of the above speak to you, there’s also YouTube TV and PlayStation Vue. YouTube TV has a range of packages with prices starting at $75 a month, and yes, all of them include ABC. As for PlayStation Vue, which has the same array of packages ranging from $50 to $85.

Exclusive Clip: 'The Way Home's Newest Unexpected Twist Might Derail the Landry Family's Entire Mission https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/2968240/the-way-home-season-2-episode-5-exclusive-clip/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/2968240/the-way-home-season-2-episode-5-exclusive-clip/#respond Fri, 01 Mar 2024 18:10:38 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=2968240 Spoiler Alert: This story will contain spoilers for The Way Home up to Season 2, episode 5.

If you’re already caught up with the latest episode of the Hallmark series The Way Home, then we’re guessing that you can barely wait until the next episode of the show comes out on Sunday. After all, the last episode of the show ended on one of the biggest cliffhangers to date.

In case you need a little refresher, the fifth episode of the show, titled “Long Time Gone,” ended with present-day Kat (played by Chyler Leigh) in 1814 as she waits for her long-lost brother Jacob, who’s now a fully-grown adult, to come back from the war. That is, however, until Jacob gets arrested for treason right when he arrives at the beach. Why was he arrested? What did he do? Will Kat ever get a chance to meet him now?

With all these questions still spinning in our heads, the sixth episode of the show, which airs on March 3 on Hallmark, couldn’t come fast enough.

Luckily, however, SheKnows is revealing an exclusive clip of the next episode that will have questioning everything they know about Jacob and his disappearance.

“What do we do Elliot? This is so wrong! We both know it’s not Jacob, mom is back there waiting for his boat to come in,” Alice (Sadie Laflamme-Snow) says to Elliot (Evan Williams). “The forensics people can’t have possibly found him.”

Does this mean Jacob’s body has been found? If so, is he still a child like when he disappeared? That would be impossible, right?

“So what should I tell Del?” Alice then asks about her grandmother (Andie MacDowell) “Do I tell her the truth?”

Elliot, who seems to be getting frustrated at Alice’s reaction, then gives her a major reality check. “There is no truth, not yet,” he says. “Besides, do you think Del would even believe it? You can’t say or do anything, we can’t get our hopes up.”

“It’s not even certain Kat’s gonna find Jacob, let alone bring him back,” Elliot continues. “I’m sorry, but we have to be realistic.”

At that moment, Kat texts Alice saying that she’s back from time-traveling and is back to work at the Herald. “Tell her I’ll meet her there,” Elliot says as he gets in his car. “I’m coming with you!” Alice says.

It looks like this episode will only make fans have more questions rather than get any answers for the ones we can’t stop thinking about. We can’t wait!

'Outlander' Prequel Casts Major Roles That Will Change Jamie & Claire’s Lives https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/2965182/outlander-prequel-casts-major-roles/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/2965182/outlander-prequel-casts-major-roles/#respond Mon, 26 Feb 2024 16:59:24 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=2965182 As fans anxiously await the second half of Outlander season 7, the prequel series Outlander: Blood of My Blood, which centers around the love stories between Jamie parents & Claire’s parents, is moving full speed ahead. In every love story, there are many moments that fate leads couples to. When they first meet, marry, have their first child, fall back in time, and tragically get separated by 200 years for 20 years are just a few. And for Jamie and Claire (Sam Heughan and Caitríona Balfe), there are a few vitally important people who led them to these life-changing moments. Murtagh Fraser (Duncan LaCroix), Dougal MacKenzie (Graham McTavish), Colum MacKenzie (Gary Lewis), and Ned Gowan (Bill Paterson). The younger versions of these fan favorite characters have just been cast for the prequel show, while Outlander gets ready to film its final season. Check out the newest cast members, and the latest news on the second half of Outlander season 7 and season 8, including Balfe’s directing debut.

In case you missed it, Claire and Jamie’s parents have already been cast. Jamie’s parents will be played by Harriet Slater (Ellen MacKenzie) and Jamie Roy (Brian Fraser), and Claire’s parents will be played by Hermione Corfield (Julia Moriston) and Jeremy Irvine (Henry Beauchamp).

Graham McTavish, Bill Paterson, Caitríona Balfe, Duncan LaCroix, and Sam Heughan
Graham McTavish, Bill Paterson, Caitríona Balfe, Duncan LaCroix, and Sam Heughan

Murtagh Fitzgibbons Fraser, Dougal MacKenzie, Colum MacKenzie, and Ned Gowan, are the four characters whose younger versions will be seen in the upcoming prequel series, and will all irreparably change Claire and Jamie’s lives in the future. Featured in seasons 1 through 5 in Outlander, these characters all made a deep impact on Jamie and Claire. Some good, some bad, like really bad. Looking at you, Dougal. But some really good, like Jamie’s godfather, Murtagh, who was in love with Jamie’s mother and protected Jamie until his dying day. RIP, Murtagh.

Rory Alexander and Duncan LaCroix
Rory Alexander and Duncan LaCroix as “Murtagh Fraser”

Rory Alexander (Inland, Call the Midwife) joins as Murtagh Fraser. Murtagh is the reason Claire met Jamie. He’s also Jamie’s godfather, and one of the few people who knew Claire was a time-traveler. He saved Claire from being brutally attacked by Blackjack Randall, but then to keep her from screaming, he bopped her on her head and knocked her out, then galloped off on a horse with her, where she met Jamie Fraser and his broken dislocated shoulder. Thanks, Murtagh! Honestly, Jamie and Claire’s first ‘date’ was super painful for both of them. But still they managed to make googly eyes at each other. Murtagh is the best curmudgeonly godfather-friend you could ever want.

Sam Retford and Graham McTavish as “Dougal MacKenzie”
Sam Retford and Graham McTavish as “Dougal MacKenzie”

Sam Retford (Ackley Bridge) plays the fiery Douglas MacKenzie. Dougal is Jamie’s uncle, his mother’s brother, and the reason why Jamie and Claire marry. Was he just a doting matchmaking uncle you ask? Nope, he was not. He wanted his nephew to marry Claire so Jamie would have no chance of replacing Colum as the leader of their clan! Shrewd uncle plan, but listen, it worked out well for everyone, Jamie, Claire, their sex life, Brianna (Sophie Skelton), and pretty much the entire outlander audience. There was one person it didn’t work out for, and that’s Dougal. Big D became a dead D. Because Jamie and Claire killed him, and they looked damn good doing it. Seriously, go rewatch it, the couple that murders their uncle together stays together!

Seamus McLean Ross and Gary Lewis as “Colum MacKenzie”
Seamus McLean Ross and Gary Lewis as “Colum MacKenzie”

Seamus McLean Ross (Rebus, Payback) will play Dougal and Ellen MacKenzie’s brother Colum. Like Dougal, he was also instrumental in Jamie and Claire’s union. He was slightly better than his brother, in that he valued Claire as a healer, and is the reason she was forced to stay at Castle Leoch. But then again, he may have had a slight hand in possibly not helping Claire when she was thrown in jail for being a witch and almost burned at the stake. (Side eye to Laoghaire). Claire was whipped though. But luckily Jamie rescued her after 5 lashes. And then Claire decided to tell Jamie everything that she’s not a witch but from the future. Jamie believed her and she chose to not return to the future and Frank but instead enjoyed a super happy life with Jamie, where nothing bad happened at all.

Conor MacNeil and Bill Patterson as "Ned Gowan"
Conor MacNeil and Bill Patterson as “Ned Gowan”

Conor MacNeil (The Tourist, Industry, The Fall, Belfast) joins as young Ned Gowan. MacNeil was also in Belfast, starring Outlander’s own Caitríona Balfe and Jamie Dornan. Ned was a lawyer who helped get Claire’s wedding dress from a brothel. Not all heroes wear capes alright! Played to perfection by Ned Gowan, he also tried (unsuccessfully) to free Claire from the witch trial. He also helped Jamie out when Claire returned from the future, and Jamie had to lose his second annoying wife Laoghaire’s who wasn’t really his wife because Claire never died. When Claire returns 20 years later, she was shocked Ned was alive, (so was Ned). The real question is, is Ned alive in present day on Outlander? It’s possible, he could be 115 years old.

Tony Curran also joins as Lord Lovat, Jamie’s grandfather who appeared in season 2 of Outlander, and is not exactly a beloved family member. In fact, he seems to have been actively against the pairing of Jamie’s parents. Curran will also star with Julianne Moore in Starz’s limited series Mary & George this April. Many more fan favorite roles are no doubt being cast, like Laoghaire’s granny, Mrs. Fitzgibbons, played in Outlander by Annette Badland, she’ll probably be the local healer like Claire.

Sam Heughan & Caitríona Balfe
Sam Heughan & Caitríona Balfe

As for an update on Outlander, Balfe and Heughan, the hit show will soon celebrate its 10th anniversary, air the second half of its seventh season later this year, and soon begin production for season 8, which will be its final season. So, there will be a double dose of Outlander for the next year or two, which should make fans happy in every time period, namely for the foreseeable future.

Balfe revealed in The Women of Outlander Panel at ATX Festival, that she would be directing a full episode this season and they would be filming it first. A picture of Balfe and Maril Davis shared on the official Outlander account, indicates Balfe is already prepping for her directorial debut.

While you’re waiting for part 2 of season 7 of Outlander, catch up on the first half with Balfe and Heughan’s interview, Maril Davis’s breakdown of the mid-season finale, and check out all of our recaps here: Episode 7.1Episode 7.2Episode 7.3Episode 7.4 and Episode 7.5Episode 7.6, and Episode 7.7 and the mid-season finale 7.8.

Outlander: Blood of My Blood will be executive produced by Matthew Roberts, as well as Maril Davis and Ron Moore, who developed Outlander for television. Outlander book author Diana Gabaldon will serve as consulting producer. All seasons of Outlander are streaming now on Starz.

14 Celebrities Who Said 'No Thanks' to Major Awards & Honors https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2960948/celebrities-turned-down-awards-honors/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2960948/celebrities-turned-down-awards-honors/#respond Tue, 20 Feb 2024 22:45:29 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2960948 As an actor, musician or successful celebrity, there are dozens of coveted awards they can be nominated for and win. From the Oscars to the BAFTA to the Emmys, winning these awards solidifies an actor as the best of the best in the industry. As a British actor, that list gets even bigger considering the honors that could be given to them like becoming a Member of the Order of the British Empire honor (aka an MBE) or being given a knighthood/damehood.

And while that may all be true, some celebrities have proven that winning titles and awards aren’t what they’re all about. Country legend Dolly Parton, for example, notoriously turned down two major honors in the past few years.

The first was when she said “no thank you” to former president Trump when he offered her the Presidential Medal of Freedom not once, but twice! Not long after, Parton turned down another major honor yet again when she declined her nomination into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. “Even though I am extremely flattered and grateful to be nominated for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, I don’t feel that I have earned that right,” Parton wrote in a statement at the time. “I really do not want votes to be split because of me, so I must respectfully bow out.”

Regina King’s Drastic Transformation To Play Shirley Chisholm Is Revealed in New Trailer https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/2960468/regina-king-shirley-chisholm-netflix-trailer/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/articles/2960468/regina-king-shirley-chisholm-netflix-trailer/#respond Mon, 19 Feb 2024 18:19:22 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?p=2960468 Some pioneering figures are long overdo for the mainstream biopic treatment, including trailblazing politician Shirley Chisholm. The late U.S. Representative made history when, in 1972, she became the first woman and Black candidate for a major-party nomination for President of the United States, running to secure the Democratic party’s nomination. That very story is on its way to Netflix this March, with Regina King transforming into the history-making figure.

In the first trailer for the forthcoming film, King is wholly in-character from her hair, makeup, and wardrobe to the cadence of Chisholm’s voice. Shirley dramatizes and depicts Chisholm’s bid for the Democratic party’s nomination and her political endeavors and passion. Chisholm had already made history as the first Black woman elected to Congress in 1968. Her feat to secure the nomination and eventual office of President of the United States, however, was her greatest and boldest feat of her career.

SheKnows spoke with King about the daunting task of playing such an iconic, important figure in American history back in December 2022. “You know, it was really tough because her life is so rich, and the story we’re telling is just a slice of life, just a slice of history, a slice of a moment in time that she was the first, the first in so many ways,” King said. The actress and filmmaker emphasized that “no one knows” who Chisholm was.

“People say, ‘Oh, I’ve seen a picture before,’ [but] won’t even know her name. She was a maverick, she was a blueprint for a President Obama or a Hillary Clinton,” King said. Indeed, Chisholm’s confidence and dedication to public service paved the way for so many politicians who came after her. Now, perhaps, everyone will know Chisholm’s name.

“My hope is that this slice of life of her story that we’re telling…that it will inspire people to want to look her up and learn more about her,” King said. Shirley is written and directed by Oscar-winning producer John Ridley (12 Years a Slave). The film hits Netflix March 22.

John Malkovich Talks The New Look & Forgotten History about Coco Chanel & Christian Dior https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/videos/2960247/john-malkovich-the-new-look/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/videos/2960247/john-malkovich-the-new-look/#respond Mon, 19 Feb 2024 11:36:25 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc_top_video&p=2960247 Fashion designer Lucien Lelong is credited as the man who saved French couture during War World II. John Malkovich portrays him in the limited series, The New Look, co-starring Ben Mendelsohn as Christian Dior, Maisie Williams as Catherine Dior, and Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel. The story centers around how each of the designers survived the German invasion in the late 1940s. All three designers rose to fame, but behind the beautiful dresses was a much sadder story for Dior, Chanel and Lelong. Dior’s sister Catherine was captured by the Nazis for her resistance work in trying to protect Jewish people. Chanel’s history with the Nazis is less noble and the series shows how she became a Nazi informant and had an affair with a German officer. Malkovich sat down with SheKnows for an exclusive chat where he breaks down that time in history, and specifically the conveniently forgotten part of that history that many might not think of when they first hear the name Coco Chanel.

Like many, Binoche admitted that she wasn’t aware of Coco Chanel and Christian Dior’s complicated story during World War II. History has remembered mainly the glamorous parts of the fashion legends, ignoring that they both rose to fame while the Nazis were in power. Lelong, Dior and Chanel all had to make choices, some that aren’t very easy to sympathize with looking back. “It is a forgotten bit of history, but history is to be forgotten, meaning it always has been, and its lessons rarely learned,” Malkovich says. He then continues, “A lot of the accommodations people made in the circumstances which they found themselves, I don’t think people now would make any less accommodations. In fact, I think they would make much more. Our recent bout with Covid-19 proves that.”

John Malkovich
John Malkovich

Lelong negotiated with the Germans during the war to make sure that French couture was allowed to operate in France and not move to Berlin. Though some might argue that Lelong was a collaborator with the Germans. “I think he did what most people would do in the situation in which he found himself… he made accommodations (to) survive. They didn’t know whether the Nazi occupation would last a month, a year, or a thousand years. They had no idea what the future would bring,” Malkovich explains, adding that for all they knew, the Third Reich’s reign could last forever. “I think Lelong did what he had to do to keep the French fashion business and haute couture going during these very dark times. And that included designing dresses for Nazi wives, mistresses and officials.”

Watch the exclusive video interview above to hear more about Malkovich’s thoughts on Christian Dior, Coco Chanel and why history must not be ignored. 33 Great Shows Netflix Canceled in 2 Seasons or Less https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2697266/canceled-netflix-shows/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/slideshow/2697266/canceled-netflix-shows/#respond Sun, 18 Feb 2024 19:02:47 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc-gallery&p=2697266 Remember a decade ago when Netflix was the streaming app to watch everything on (and even at one point the only one to get Friends?!) Well, times have certainly changed, because instead of being one of the favorite streaming services, it’s gotten a bit of a reputation over the years. For what, you may ask? Chances are you already know what we mean; Netflix is now known for canceling their original series in two seasons or less.

First, it was Sense8, then it was the Baby-Sitters Club, and now the two newest victims are Inside Job and 1899. And if you’ve been on Twitter for the past 24 hours, then you know how fans are losing their minds over the sudden cancellation of fan-favorite animated series Inside Job.

When Netflix cancels a show, fans are often left disgruntled and without closure (99.9 percent of the time, there’s an insane cliffhanger we’ll never get the answers to!) We’re in 2023 now, and it’s still looking bleak for Netflix shows.

According to What’s on Netflix, Netflix bases its decisions on renewals and cancellations on how many people watch the show, if/how quickly they finish whatever is released, and budget constraints. However, fans have been recently calling that methodology out, due to the fact that many beloved shows get axed for virtually no reason.

If you’re as angry as Twitter is right now, then let’s take a look back at the good shows Netflix decided to cancel in two seasons or less.

A version of this article was originally published on Jan 2023.

Juliette Binoche Reveals Coco Chanel’s Rarely Talked About Dark Side in The New Look https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/videos/2959904/juliette-binoche-coco-chanel-the-new-look/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/videos/2959904/juliette-binoche-coco-chanel-the-new-look/#respond Sun, 18 Feb 2024 17:21:57 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc_top_video&p=2959904 When one hears the names Coco Chanel and Christian Dior, the first word that comes to mind is couture. The second is probably icons. While many may immediately think of Chanel No. 5 when hearing about the fashion legend, most don’t know about Chanel’s history during World War II. And it’s a shocker. Juliette Binoche, who plays Coco Chanel in The New Look, sat down exclusively with SheKnows to discuss her new limited series on Apple TV+. Binoche is joined by Ben Mendelsohn, who plays Christian Dior, John Malkovich as Lucien Lelong, and Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams as Christian’s sister Catherine Dior. The New Look is an eye-opening look at Chanel’s not so iconic past – specifically her involvement with the Nazi party, and the Dior family’s brutal hardships during the war.

Binoche confesses like many she had little knowledge of Chanel’s history as a Nazi informant. The New Look explores this side of Chanel, that seems to have been brushed under the historical rug. As you watch the show, Chanel No. 5 might not smell as sweet. Binoche herself admits, “I didn’t know very much, I knew there were some shadows around there, it took me a while to understand where it came from, not to excuse her, but to understand where the roots were.” Chanel was involved in an affair with a German official and Binoche says her relationship with Boy Capel, who gave her confidence, but subsequently betrayed her by marrying someone of higher status, impacted Chanel a lot. But wait, a broken heart doesn’t justify becoming a Nazi informant. Binoche says, Capel’s death and the trauma of that relationship seems to have turned Chanel into some who didn’t care about anything but having fun.

Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel
Juliette Binoche as Coco Chanel

We asked Binoche if she was able to feel sympathy for Chanel, and whether Chanel was conveniently naïve or intentionally trying to hurt people. “When you play a character like this, you’re not looking for sympathy, you’re looking for something to understand the need, and relate to the need – she was manipulative at certain times, I don’t think there was premeditation.”

Chanel also had a relationship with a German official, Spatz, played artfully by Bad Sisters’ villain Claes Bang, who ultimately turned out to be a spy who had relationships with many women. Some says Chanel didn’t have a lot to do with the Nazi party, but she was in bed with them. Literally.

The history of Coco Chanel and Christian Dior during World War II is deeply depressing, as we learn that Dior goes to Chanel for help to get his sister Catherine out of a Nazi work camp. Catherine was the inspiration for Dior’s 1947 “New Look” collection. Catherine was a resistance fighter who was captured by the Nazis. If you’re wondering whether Chanel helped a fellow fashionista out, she did not. The two were never fans of each other, but this probably put the nail in the coffin, or rather pin in their cushion. Politics made strange bedfellows, and Coco Chanel chose unwisely.

However, Binoche reveals there was one person Chanel cared about and that was her nephew, a French soldier named André, who had been captured by the Nazis. In fact, some say Chanel only was involved with the Nazis to free her nephew.

“If I put myself in her shoes, she was definitely a survivor, and conqueror, and didn’t care about the consequences…. And there was a feeling of being entitled, because she was the star of design at the time. During the wars, she was the one liberating women – liberating women from corsets, liberating women from skirts, putting pants on, cutting her hair, suntan. Everything she was doing for herself, became fashionable,” Binoche says, and adds that Chanel never wanted to dress the Germans. But the Germans bought her business. “When she learned that her nephew was a prisoner of the Germans, she wanted to save him.”

In fact, that might explain her involvement with German official-gigolo spy Spatz. Though Binoche says she also wanted to “have a little bit of a good time, to lighten up during that horrible period of time.”

Milo Ventimiglia Shares How Luke & Liam Hemsworth Made Up for Not Meeting This 'Land of Bad' Co-Star https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/videos/2958695/milo-ventimiglia-luke-liam-hemsworth-russell-crowe-land-of-bad/ https://www.sheknows.com/entertainment/videos/2958695/milo-ventimiglia-luke-liam-hemsworth-russell-crowe-land-of-bad/#respond Fri, 16 Feb 2024 17:52:36 +0000 https://www.sheknows.com/?post_type=pmc_top_video&p=2958695 Whether you know Milo Ventimiglia as Jack Pearson in This Is Us, Jess in Gilmore Girls, or even Peter Petrelli in Heroes, the actor’s upcoming movie, Land of Bad, which hits theatres on Feb. 16, sees him in a whole new light. In the movie, Ventimiglia transforms into a badass action star as his character, Sugar, won’t stop at anything to see his mission through.

Alongside Sugar in the mission is a group of three other officials including Kinney (played by Liam Hemsworth), Abel (Luke Hemsworth) and Bishop (Ricky Whittle). And, given that the premise involves the four of them in a dangerous ambush into enemy territory, it’s safe to say that things get really bloody really quick.

When Ventimiglia talked to SheKnows, however, it seems like their time in between takes was luckily quite different. “I mean, when you’re working with Ricky Whittle, and Luke Hemsworth, and Liam Hemsworth it’s all just good times all the time,” he says. “They’re light and they’re fun and we’re having a good time and cracking jokes and watching those guys eat a pound of meat every 20 minutes.”

“I think given the explosions and the battles and the close-quarter combats, we were all just laughing and stretching,” Ventimiglia says, adding that he sometimes had to “stretch out a little bit more” because he was one of the “old guys.”

As for the co-star who made him laugh the most on set, Ventimiglia knew immediately who it was. “Ricky Whittle,” he says. “He’s devilishly funny.” “Ricky was the one that was constantly cracking jokes, constantly cracking up,” Ventimiglia remembers. “And then Liam Hemsworth was matching it.”

As for which one of the two Hemsworth brothers he considers his favorite, Ventimiglia refused to take sides. “I can’t do it,” he says. “I love them all equally, as similar as they are in the way of a Hemsworth, they’re also so unique.”

Ventimiglia then dished on his expert Hemsworth knowledge. “I look at Luke, and I can very much see how he’s the older brother leading the way,” he says of the Westworld star. “And I’ve met Chris [Hemsworth] a few times and I see Chris [has] gone out and done his own thing like the middle child. And then there’s Liam who’s just deep with emotion.”

“They’re all so unique but they all fundamentally have this just good spirit and kindness and heart and protective quality that they’re just they’re a good family,” Ventimiglia adds. “You know, Mom and Dad Hemsworth did well.”

And while Ventimiglia’s time on set seems great, there’s one co-star of his, Russell Crowe, who he unfortunately didn’t get to meet. In the movie, Crowe plays Air Force drone pilot Reaper who becomes the crew’s eyes in the sky during their battle for survival.

“No, I never met Russell,” Ventimiglia admits. “It was a bummer. It’s actually hard when you do a Russell Crowe movie and you don’t get to work with Russell Crowe.”

“But that doesn’t make the experience any less,” he continues. “I still admire the guy and love what he did in the movie and am proud of the work and everything.”

“Russell was making his own movie, then they just kind of pasted it all together,” Ventimiglia adds.

For a final question, we asked Ventimiglia about playing characters (both in This Is Us and Land of Bad) who, without giving too much away, have somewhat tragic endings.

“It’s kind of just like life, right? We all know, we have an end we don’t know when it’s gonna happen,” Ventimiglia reflects. “So why not live life fully? Why not experience what these characters are experiencing at such a level that you were really invested in them?”

He then went on to add that a specific moment in the first scene of the movie made his character come to life for him. “I think it was important that very first opening scene with myself and Liam, when he’s deciding between Frosted Flakes and Froot Loops, and I say ‘Go to Froot Loops, my daughter loves them,'” he describes. “Then bam the guy already humanized, you already understand him, you can take him out of that uniform and be like, ‘Oh, he’s just dad. He’s got a little girl. Oh man, I want to see his journey I want to root for him. I want to see how this goes.'”

“You know what the end is for these characters and you know that any of us are going to have an end but you don’t know exactly what it is,” Ventimiglia reflects. “So you kind of have to just live your life fully and be a good person and enjoy yourself.”

While there may be variations across the world, everyone is somewhat familiar with the expression “Behind every man is an even greater woman.” And while we can all agree that that is undeniably true, the new National Geographic show Genius: MLK/X gives it a whole new light.

The series, which is available for streaming on Disney+ and Hulu, takes viewers into both the private and public lives of civil rights advocates and many times adversaries Malcolm X (played by Aaron Pierre) and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (played by Kelvin Harrison Jr.). In the fifth episode of the limited series, which premieres tomorrow Feb. 15, viewers learn more about Malcolm X’s relationship with his wife Betty Shabazz (Jayme Lawson) and MLK Jr.’s marriage to Coretta Scott King (Weruche Opia).

“Pressures and expectations take a toll on Coretta and Betty,” reads the synopsis of the episode, titled “Matriarchs.” “They each question their resolve and decisions as they navigate the rigors of a public persona and private life.”

In a clip provided exclusively to SheKnows ahead of tomorrow’s episode, we see a glimpse of a conversation between Betty and her mother, Ollie Mae Sanders (played by Michael Hyatt).

“The Housewives League and the NAACP are hosting a fundraiser tea and fashion show next week, too bad you won’t be here to attend,” Ollie tells her daughter, who seems anxious as she walks around the house. “I left Malcolm,” she then admits while sitting down at the table.

“So you will be able to attend,” Ollie responds dryly.

“I don’t know, I don’t know what I’m doing,” Betty says. “I mean I know I couldn’t stay, four years ago I was supposed to be a nurse and now I don’t recognize my life or my place in it.”

Her mother, noticing her panic, tries to calm her down. “Slow down, B,” she says.

“Malcolm took away my class and he won’t talk about it,” Betty continues. “I don’t know how to make him understand. And he hasn’t even called to see if Attallah and I are okay! This is the man that I have to spend the rest of my life with.”

As a reminder, Shabazz and Malcolm X were married from 1958 until his tragic assassination in 1965. Over the years, the two welcomed six kids Qubilah, Attallah, Gamilah Lumumba, Ilyasah, Malaak, and Malikah.

“Betty, I don’t understand,” Ollie then says to her daughter. “I don’t know how to be a wife,” Betty confesses. “The first time we were alone together was on our wedding night and now we have a child and then there’s all the politics of the nation.”

“Betty, I don’t know what you want me to tell you,” Ollie responds. “I want you to tell me how to do this.”

While the mother-daughter conversation seems relatable to any woman who’s struggled to find their footing as a wife or a mother, seeing such a raw conversation between these historical figures is all the more enlightening.

To find out more about Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Jr.’s lives and relationships, and their wives’ impact on American history, be sure to check out the rest of the season Genius: MLK/X. Two episodes air every Thursday at 9 p.m. ET/PT on National Geographic and are available to stream the next day on Disney+ and Hulu.
